An interview with the Y Team

WHO is Y?

In late 2004, Rose Bradshaw first met with Barbara Gare to discuss the commercialisation of the beautiful skincare and haircare she'd been making for family and friends for the past twenty years or more. Rose's experience with breast cancer had left her with the desire to make sure that people around the world have the opportunity to choose products that are genuinely good for them and completely free from potentially harmful chemicals. She found a kindred soul in Barbara, whose passion for the environment, health and wellness made for an ideal partnership.

Before too long, we threw in our jobs and devoted ourselves full-time to taking Y natural to the world.

Three important things distinguish us from the makers of other brands of natural skincare.

The first is that we are fully committed to producing the most luxurious and naturally beneficial products possible. Our products are premium products made from the best natural ingredients, are the most beautiful to use, and the most beneficial to skin. If an ingredient is not natural, it will not be used in our products.  Nor will an ingredient be in our products even if it IS natural but we don't believe it is beneficial to skin or hair (which is why we don't use ethanol).

The second is our commitment to education. We want people to know and understand skin care products, what goes into them, what doesn’t, and why. Knowledge empowers people, and helps them make good decisions.

The third is that we intend to revolutionise the skincare industry. We want the future of skincare to be free of unhealthy petroleum-based products, chemicals, carcinogens and mutagens. These products are not good for our skin, are not good for our health, and are not good for our environment. We want to end the widespread use of deceptive terminology and misleading statements.

We hope that you will help us and that Y will be You too.

WHO are Y's Co-founders & Executive Directors?

Rose Bradshaw

Rose’s career in the beauty industry spans some thirty years with twenty of those as a salon owner and educator. Rose's interest in natural products is long-standing, and led to her studying Chemistry at the University of Sydney.  She's been innovating and creating new natural formulations ever since.

Career changes in the mid-nineties led Rose into franchising where she became master franchisee of The Cheesecake Shop, making a huge success of the iconic Australian franchise in South Australia and the Northern Territory. In 2002 after selling the franchise, Rose returned to formal studies, entering the MBA program at the University of Adelaide and Graduate Diploma at of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Upon completion of these studies in 2004, Rose returned to the beauty industry, determined to launch the most natural and precious skincare range in the world. And with her business partner, she is now doing precisely that.

Barbara Gare

Barbara’s move into the beauty industry is quite a shift for someone who started her career as a geophysicist in the oil and gas industry, then other blokey arenas including maths, engineering and techology.  These roles range from managing a national innovation program in new media to marketing of mathematical modelling and lecturing in communications at the University of Adelaide.

Barbara has an MBA from the Adelaide Graduate School of Business, undertaken as the 1998 winner of the prestigious Guy Lloyd Scholarship.  Her MBA, BSc Honours (Geology, Zoology, Botany and Genetics) and studies towards a BA (German, Chinese, Spanish and International Studies) were all at the University of Adelaide.  Not known for doing things half-heartedly, she was once into rogaining, a sport where you run cross country for 24 hours, winning the World Rogaining Championships (mixed division) in 1992.  She’s still on her feet, now training to run the Berlin marathon.

With her experience in innovation, commercialisation, communications, education and new media, Barbara is greatly enjoying the chance to make a difference in an industry where change is way overdue.
